THE INDEPENDENT IN POLITICS

STEPHEN KING-HALL, COMMANDER

The author of this article, who sat as an Independent M.P. from 1942–1945 and unsuccessfully contested the Ormskirk Division in 1945 and the Bridgwater Division in 1950 as an Independent candidate, thinks it desirable to remark that any views expressed in the following paper are personal and not to be regarded as in any way representing the policy or opinion of the Hansard Society, of whose Council he has been Chairman since 1944. He wishes to acknowledge his debt to a learned authority who desires to remain anonymous but who gave invaluable assistance by placing at his disposal the results of some historical research upon the subject.
