Politicians, Privacy and Media Intrusion in Britain
This article examines recent trends in media reporting of the private lives of political figures in the UK, which reveal a less deferential and more intrusive media culture than prevailed in earlier periods. The article examines the broader context of these changes, and concludes that it is futile to blame either politicians or journalists for precipitating these trends. Media cynicism and intrusiveness is as much driven by competitive pressures within media and political systems in the UK as between them.
