The Media and Democratic Change in Mexico
Changes in the Mexican media have been part cause, part consequence of the country's long-term transition from authoritarian to democratic government. In place of a cosy consensus between private owners and politicians a more troubled relationship exists in which scandals and maladministration are increasingly exposed. A new set of journalistic values and higher quality reporting have been evident. Politicians have recently attempted to harness the power of the media to their own ends, but this has sometimes proven to be a double-edged sword and the public image of many politicians has suffered accordingly.
